In the last post, I talked about Cinderella and God's love. Cinderella sings the song, "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" at the beginning of the movie. She tells us that if we keep believing in our dreams that they will come true. I must say that would be nice but it is not true. I know. I'm kind of being a killjoy but it is true. Simply believing in your dreams does not make them come true. I tried that and it did not work.
It is alright to believe that your dreams are true and that they are the wishes of your heart. However, simply wishing for something does not bring it to reality. I dreamed and wished to go to college. But, it was the hard work that I put in that made me successful. How do you ever accomplish anything if you never put the work in to achieve it? Although, I admit, it would certainly be a dream if I could have gone through all this college work without having to lift a single finger. That would be wonderful. However, it is simply not true. Do opportunities come knocking? Yes but even Cinderella had to finish her chores to be able to go to the ball. As soon as we neglect the work God has given us, we step away from His will and into our own.
I dreamed of going to Israel. But I could not simply go because I wanted to. What's more, I had to fundraise and put in the work to get there. But by doing all that work, I appreciated the trip far more than I would have if it had just been handed to me on a silver platter. Yet what is most important and my main point is that it is all impossible without God. God is our way-maker. Without Him, we are simply dust.
It is not our dreams which we must put our faith in. It is God. God has carried me through many storms and he continues to guide me through the darkness. He is always there. He always loves and will never abandon us. The nature of God is reliable and unchanging. When we read the Word, we learn more about Who God is. When we spend time with Him, we come to know Him. He is not some nameless Prince Charming here to rescue us, He is a friend, a Father, a Lover, a King. We are His children. This love is unchanging. This is what we can put our trust in. We can trust in Who God is and that He keeps all the promises He makes.
God's promise is a promise you can rely on more than any human contract or promise. I once dreamed of falling in love and I admit, there were times I thought I had fallen in love. But, my love for God is unique and special. I am thankful to Him for His loving me. After all, He loved me before I even knew Him. I had come to a peace regarding romance here on Earth. I decided that it was not possible for there to be a kind of true love between people and I was okay with that. You can agree or disagree with me as much as you want but that's where I was. Keyword in that last sentence being, was. I believe God has honored my dream of a love on Earth and I am very thankful for it. Does that mean that that is for everyone? No. Even Paul encourages people to avoid marriage (1 Cor. 7:8 among others). Do not go looking for romance but pray to God about it. Seek out peace first. For if you enter into a relationship for the sake of an idea or desire, it is worthless and fruitless. Yet if you enter into a relationship out of genuine love for that other person, you will find your love natural and pure. You will desire to treat them well. You will desire your relationship to be good. Yet all this is nothing without God. For God is Love and by loving each other you reflect God. So, rely on Him to guide you. Rely on God's enduring love to show you how to love each other. These are my thoughts and reflections of the past few years culminating into this message. I hope they stick with you and encourage you in your walk with God.
Trust in God Always, E. K. Donaldson
